Computer restarts after installing Windows Updates without prompting first

I just purchased a new laptop with Windows 7.  It has several times restarted after installing updates without prompting me first so I lose all my work. Vista used to warn me and let me postpone restarting my computer.  Is something similar possible in
Windows 7?  Thanks for any suggestions!

Windows Update will notify you if you need to restart your computer to finish installing updates, and give you the opportunity to restart right away or postpone the restart.
If you're away from your computer for an extended period of time, Windows will automatically restart your computer. Windows does
this to help make sure all the latest security and other important updates are applied in a timely manner to help keep your computer more secure.
You can use Group Policy to prevent the automatic restart: 
Click Start and type gpedit.msc in the search bar and pressEnter
Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates >Windows Components >
Windows Update Find No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations and double click itChoose Enabled and click OK Close the Local Group Policy Editor window
The Group Policy solution will only apply to Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate.

Run CHKDSK

• Go to the Start button.
• In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• Reboot your computer.
