Hello!

While I was looking for a completely unrelated setting in
Control Panel in Windows 8,
I stumbled on the Action Center settings
and noticed that the Network Access Protection Agent service is
not running. I opened the Computer Management snap-in and noticed that the service is
configured by default to be started manually.
I looked for more information on the internet but I was not able to find a
detailed explanation on its purpose for a personal computer. The only detailed
explanation I found was only applicable to
Windows Server.

Is it really necessary to configure this service to
start automatically on a home network,
or can it be just left configured to start manually? What's its purpose on Windows 8? Is it there just in case the computer needs to access a corporate network domain?

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64-bit edition on an Acer Aspire 5552-5898 connected most of the time to my home network, although usually I also connect to public networks.
My computer is not configured to connect to a domain on a corporate network, not
even using VPN.
When I access my corporate email account from this computer, I need to authenticate first with a code provided by an RSA device before I can log on to Outlook (OWA).

As I understand, in the Action Center settings the Network Access Protection Agent service is not running.

The Network Access Protection (NAP) agent service collects and manages health information for client computers on a network.
Information collected by NAP agent is used to make sure that the client computer has the required software and settings.
If a client
computer is not compliant with health policy, it can be provided with restricted network access until its configuration is updated.
Depending on the configuration of health policy, client computers might be automatically updated so that users quickly regain
full network access without having to manually update their computer.

The service can be left to be configured to start manually.

It is mostly for in case the computer needs to access a corporate network domain.

Go to the Start button.
In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
Reboot your computer.

"Access denied as you do not have significant privileges. You have to invoke this utility in elevated mode."

If you receive the above error message, it means you are not logged into you computer as an Administrator. If that's the case, follow these steps to run the command prompt in elevated mode:
