Troubleshooting:brand new windows 7 home premium backup problem

Hello
I've bought new HP pavilion DM3 [external dvd drive] with new windows 7 home premium intalled approximately 4 weeks ago.
After first run and all actual updates installed I tried to backup windows on dvd-r medium. 
I started windows backup, after while it asks me for wiriteable medium so i put dvd-r inside, next step was to format dvd-r [little bit unussual, but I haven't no choice]...
After succesfull formatting it starts burning.
After couple of hours it was
still in burning mode 54% without errors and progress too.
I've tear out the cable from external dvd burner, write process failed and on dvd was written layer arround 1cm thick. 
I've tried that 2 times again with same result, but different progress of burn 56% and 25%
What shall I do?

Open Action Center by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, and then, under System and Security, clicking Review your computer's status.

Make sure your computer has at least the minimum amount of random access memory (RAM) required to run the program that is displaying the error. Look for the program requirements online or in the packaging information.
